Lemurs knock off RedHawks at Newman

FARGO – Todd Jennings thinks three ingredients are paramount to winning baseball games – pitching, defense and timely hitting.

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks catcher said the team is currently delivering in only one of those areas.

Laredo limited the RedHawks to seven hits en route to a 6-2 American Association victory Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field before 2,949 fans.

“Pitching, defense and timely hitting are what win games,” said Jennings, who had two hits and one RBI. “The only thing we’re doing right now is pitching. So we have one of the three main ingredients. … It’s very frustrating because we want to win. We can’t win like this.”

The RedHawks (2-7) have lost two consecutive games and have an 0-6 record against Laredo this season. The Lemurs (9-0) remained unbeaten. F-M has scored a combined 11 runs in its six losses against Laredo. That’s an average of 1.8 runs per game.

“We probably don’t have enough professional hitters to go with the two or three professional hitters that we have,” RedHawks manager Doug Simunic said. “Our lineup is really lean. We can’t create enough offense.”

The RedHawks have committed five errors in their past two games, including two Saturday. They have been without starting shortstop Zach Penprase, who is missing this series due to a prior commitment. Penprase, a defensive ace, should return Monday.

“We’ve got guys playing out of position right now,” Simunic said.

Laredo took control with a three-run fourth inning to take the lead for good. Shortstop Jimmy Mojica capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to center field. That gave the Lemurs a 3-1 lead.

The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a Ronnie Bourquin sacrifice fly scored Tim Alberts. F-M had a chance for a bigger inning, but had a runner thrown out at home plate and also left the bases loaded.

“We’re not getting timely hits,” Jennings said. “If you can’t do that, this is what happens.”

RedHawks starter Paul Burnside held Laredo scoreless through three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The right-hander was lifted in the fourth after allowing three runs and walking two batters in that frame.

The final game of the three-game series is scheduled for 1 p.m. today. The Lemurs have a chance to complete a series sweep.

“You don’t want to wait too long, but we’re off the pace,” Simunic said. “You got to keep playing with the people we got until we can do something about it.”

NOTES: Right-hander Taylor Stanton (1-0, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to start today for the RedHawks. Laredo is expected to counter with left-hander Ryan Sasaki (0-0, 3.17 ERA).

Laredo’s Wilborn to be out a month after being hit in head

FARGO – Laredo Lemurs pitcher Greg Wilborn said he expects to be out about a month after taking a line drive off his head in Friday’s game against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

“I felt fine, which was my main thing, I knew where I was,” Wilborn said before Saturday’s American Association game.

Wilborn left Friday’s game in the fifth inning after a Jose Garcia line drive struck him near his left eye that opened a cut.

Wilborn, who went to a local hospital, said he received 18 stitches, including five internal. He did suffer a small fracture on the outer rim of the bone around his eye, Wilborn said.
