West Fargo's Levin takes three events at ND state track

BISMARCK – Prior to Saturday, no West Fargo girls track and field athlete had ever won the 100-, 200- or 400-meter races at the North Dakota Class A state meet.

Junior Amanda Levin saw an opportunity to rewrite the Packers’ record books and took it.

Levin won all three races on Saturday at the Community Bowl, establishing herself as one of the state’s top sprinters.

Levin finished second in all three races to Minot’s Morgan Milbrath last spring, but a nagging hamstring injury slowed Milbrath considerably and limited her racing load.

“It’s a totally different feeling,” Levin said of winning. “I give Morgan a lot of credit for running this weekend. She has a lot of heart … It felt good to win three state championships.”

Levin becomes the first West Fargo girls track and field athlete to win three state championships at a state meet since Ellie Grooters, who won three events in 2009.

“This is what Amanda has been working for,” West Fargo girls coach Darin McKinnon said. “I’m not surprised. She is a driven athlete. She has been so focused on accomplishing her goals this spring, and it really turned into a great weekend for her.”

Levin’s day started with a second place finish in the 800-meter relay. From there the Packers’ speedster posted a time of 12.05 seconds in the 100 meters and held on to win the 400 meters with a time of 58.57. The 100 meters was Levin’s first state title win of her career.

Her three wins came in the span slightly over an hour. Levin’s final race was the 200, where she posted a time of 25.19.

“I wanted to get that third one,” Levin said. “I feel a lot better than I thought I would feel. … I had to focus on one race at a time. I really focus on staying relaxed. That’s when I race my best.”

North repeats in two relay events

Fargo North seniors Kira Larson, Sophi Simonson and Regina Nyanfor capped their prep careers with two relay wins.

The senior nucleus helped the Spartans to wins in the 800- and 1,600-meter relays in times of 1:44.08 and 4:00.49, respectively.

“I wouldn’t want to be a part of any other team than the one I’m on,” said Larson, who finishes her career with 10 state titles. “I run with a group of girls that care about each race as much as I do, so it’s an awesome feeling to end it with them.”

“We worked really hard coming into this meet,” Nyanfor added. “I’m really proud of the relay teams and all three of us.”

Freshman Olivia Hammerschmidt ran the other leg of North’s 800 relay and sophomore Jackie Harmon was the fourth runner in the 1,600 relay.

“I feel really sad because that was the last time I’ll ever run with these girls,” Simonson said following the 1,600 relay. “It’s exciting to end your career on a win.”

Pair of Bruins win state titles

Seniors Madeline Strandemo and Lindsey Klug each posted state titles for Fargo South.

Strandemo won the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 17.34 seconds.

“This is the race I wanted to win all year,” Strandemo said. “I put all my eggs in one basket and I’m pretty happy I got it.”

Klug successfully defended her 100-meter hurdles championship despite stumbling at the finish line.

Klug’s fall left all the Community Bowl looking at the video board replays, but her time of 15.22 edged out Mandan’s Chelsea Peterson, who finished 15.27.

“For a second I definitely thought Chelsea got me,” Klug said. “She has had a great season, and I was surprised I got the win. I had a solid start, but not necessarily a good finish.”

Bismarck Century won the team state championship with 177.5 points. … West Fargo finished third with 89 points. … West Fargo senior Kaley Stotz finished second in the pole vault clearing 11-0. … Former Jamestown standouts Jessica (Neva) Nygaard, Jennifer (Schmeichel) Birkmeier and Judy (Mogck) Hager were inducted into the North Dakota High School Track and Field Hall of Fame.
