Davies bests Shanley girls for East Region soccer championship

FARGO – Fargo Shanley had a shot at redemption against Fargo Davies on Saturday. But being the only team to beat the Deacons this season, the Eagles weren’t about to tarnish their winning record and lose out on the top seed in the upcoming state tournament.

Starting forward Reiley Klose and senior Emily Wendorff each had a goal and Jenny Marsh had two assists to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 win over the No. 2-seeded Deacons to win the East Region girls soccer championship.

“Shanley is an amazing team that we are going to continue to play for a long time,” Davies head coach Nick Christianson said. “It’s just a good battle between us.”

Playing against the wind in the first half, Klose’s goal broke a scoreless tie for the second time this tournament. Her shot looked like it was heading wide right, but got caught in the breeze and curved around the reaching hands of Deacons goalkeeper Jenna Zaeske and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

“It definitely feels good to give the team a little push,” Klose said. “Once we score it’s a little more relaxed.”

With a one-goal advantage, the Eagles were able to play back on defense and let the 20 mph winds help them out.

“We were playing more defensively,” Wendorff said. “In the first half, we were against the wind, so we tried to just hunker down and make sure they didn’t get one back on us.”

The Deacons had a golden opportunity at 33 minutes, 46 seconds when senior Sydney Dauenhauer was awarded a penalty kick for an aggressive challenge inside the box from a Davies defender. Her shot went right into the arms of Davies goalkeeper Lauren Orson for one of her five saves.

With five minutes left in the match, Wendorff took a pass from Marsh and fired it into the net for the team’s second goal, which sealed the deal for the Eagles.

Davies enters the state tournament as the No. 1 seed from the East and will face No. 4-seeded Mandan on Thursday at Sid Cichy Field.
