West Fargo wins East Region softball title
One pitch later, Woodbury cracked a two-run home run and that’s the kind of day it was for the Packers. Not much changed in the world of East Region softball.
The wind returned to Anderson softball complex on Saturday and West Fargo will go in the Class A state tournament with another region title. The Packers got three runs in the first inning and that was not good news for Valley City in the 8-0 win.
“You have to get a lead on them and you can’t make any mistakes,” said Valley City head coach Jason Lindgren.
Not with Woodbury on the mound. She stretched her no-hit tournament streak to eight innings with three perfect ones against Valley City. Saturday’s performance was more impressive considering the Hi-Liners came in hot at the plate.
“I was happy for them on how well they were playing,” said Woodbury, referring to having friends on the team. “But we prepared for them like any other team. You hope for the best but prepare for the worst.”
There would be no worst. A sacrifice fly by Ashley Sather and run-scoring singles from Brittany Rheault and Jordyn Johnson put Valley City in a quick hole.
“You’re always worried when teams are hot,” West Fargo coach Pat Johnson said of the Hi-Liners. “A couple swings and they’re back in it.”
Instead, it was West Fargo with those couple of swings. An infield pop fly near the first base line in the third inning was misplayed in the wind, a two-run West Fargo single that went about eight feet. Woodbury, the EDC senior player of the year, followed with her blast to right center.
“I knew I made good contact,” she said, “although I didn’t expect it to go over. It worked out.”
It was that kind of day for West Fargo.

North, Davies advance to state tournament
One day after a shootout win over Grand Forks Red River in a loser-out game, Fargo North played defensive in reaching the state tournament. Pitcher Sally Fischer limited Devils Lake to a fifth inning run in the Spartans’ 3-1 win.
Fargo Davies, the tourney’s seventh seed, also advanced with a 4-2 win over Fargo Shanley.
North grabbed a 3-0 lead with the game-winning runs coming in the third inning. Courtney Johnson scored on an error and April Krenelka’s single plated Morgan Shelton.
Davies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and made the lead stick. Carla Binde’s run-scoring double and Jamie Nelson’s RBI single did the damage.
