Letter: Tears of joy from headlineIt was wonderful to see your “Freedom for Everyone” headline on May 10. It caused tears of joy for me.
My partner and I have been together for 20 years. Like many families, our family includes children, pets and many extended family members. We have been waiting a long time for the opportunity to be recognized, protected and understood for the family that we are. This headline in your community supports and confirms our family and all families. It helps foster a welcoming and safe environment for all. Thank you.
I lived in Moorhead while attending college at Concordia, and my hometown is Stephen, Minn., 140 miles north of Moorhead. I have nieces and nephews who live in each area. They all have young families or are starting their families.
Messages such as your “Freedom for Everyone” headline tell them that whomever they are and whomever they love, they are OK and their community supports them. To not know this is to grow up with fear and prejudice. For some, they incur hate and bullying and subsequently move from the area.
