North's Larson wins fourth high jump title

BISMARCK – Fargo North’s Kira Larson has been setting the bar high in the Class A girls high jump the last five years.

On Friday, Larson stood alone after clearing 5 feet, 9 inches during the state meet at the Community Bowl.

Larson, a 6-3 senior, will play volleyball at the University of Nebraska this fall. She started her final weekend as a prep athlete by winning her fourth high jump crown in five years.

“It’s so crazy,” Larson said after breaking the record. “I’ve been hitting 5-9 for the last couple of years, and to hit 5-9 at this meet is awesome.

“To be honest, when the bar got raised to 5-9, I wasn’t even thinking about the record,” Larson added. “I was really focused, but once I made that jump I was ecstatic.”

Larson was the only jumper in the field to clear 5-7, and once she sealed the championship, her sights were set on Cindy Leingang’s state-meet record of 5-8¼. Official state records can only be broken at the state meet in North Dakota.

By rule, Larson was awarded three attempts at the record. She only needed two. After that, the bar was raised to 5-10, which would have been a personal best. Larson couldn’t clear 5-10 after three attempts.

“I wanted it so bad,” Larson said of the 5-10 mark. “Sometimes after hitting a big jump like that it’s hard to collect yourself and refocus. It just wasn’t in the cards.”

Larson competes in North’s top-seeded 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays today. She won four state titles last year and now has eight in her career.

“It’s very exciting for her,” North head girls coach Aaron Walker said. “She’s had that unofficial state record for a while now, and to get the official state record at state is nice. … With Kira it’s a combination of hard work and talent. That’s what you get when you combine those two.”

Larson cleared 5-1, 5-3, 5-5, 5-6 and 5-7 on her first attempts, which was the first time she had done that this season.

“This is what she has been working for her entire career,” said North girls high jump coach Stephanie Livingston said. “She was on.”

West Fargo’s Bishoff wins boys high jump

West Fargo senior Jordan Bishoff finished second in the boys high jump last year. On Friday, Bishoff broke through in his best event, winning his first state championship with a mark of 6-4.

Bishoff cleared 6-4 on his first attempt, but his day almost started with disappointment after the North Dakota State recruit missed his first two attempts at 5-10. The third time was the charm for Bishoff, who was steady the rest of the way.

“Coming in you know you are going to miss some jumps,” Bishoff said. “If it comes down to that third jump, you have to say, ‘I got to make this and move on and worry about the next height.’ ”

Bishoff said he wasn’t as consistent as he hoped we would have been, but his focus now shifts to the long jump, javelin and 110-meter hurdles.

“I got the championship early in the meet,” Bishoff said. “It’s a big momentum driver for my other events. Hopefully I can come out (today) and do my best.”

Sprints

West Fargo junior Amanda Levin recorded the fastest times in the preliminaries of the 100, 200 and 400 meters. Levin raced to a time of 12.27 seconds in the 100, 25.37 in the 200 and 59.69 in the 400. … Bismarck junior Natalee Todd snapped West Fargo Christina Bruenjes’ string of three titles in the triple jump. Todd won the event with a mark of 38-5½, while Bruenjes failed to make the finals. … West Fargo senior Jaime Heinen-Lugert finished second in the boys triple jump, an event he won a year ago. Heinen-Lugert is the top-seeded jumper in today’s long jump. “I want to redeem myself for sure,” said Heinen-Lugert, who also finished third in the high jump. … Fargo Davies freshman Katie Bye finished second in the girls 1,600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 15.47 seconds. … Bismarck leads the boys team race with 84 points. … Bismarck Century leads the girls team race with 51.5 points.
