Fargo North girls re-write record books at East Region track

FARGO – Several records fell at the North Dakota East Region girls track and field meet on Saturday, and all of them were broken by Fargo North.

Several Spartans had record setting days at Fargo South’s Orvik Track. Senior Kira Larson matched her unofficial state record of 5 feet, 9 inches in the high jump, which also broke her East Region meet record of 5-8 set in 2010 as well as her stadium record of 5-7 set in 2011.

“It felt really good to clear 5-9 this year,” said Larson, who has won three state high jump titles. “I didn’t get 5-10 like I wanted to, but it is a personal record for this year and it is reassuring to know I can hit 5-9 and go higher. It’s definitely a big confidence booster.”

Larson also was the anchor leg of North’s 400-meter relay that broke an East Region record. Larson, Regina Nyanfor, Liza Thompson and Sophi Simonson raced to a time of 49.67 seconds, which broke a 10-year-old record of 49.94 set by the Fargo South relay team of Shannon Meloy, McKenzi Mehlisch, Cathy Bader and Ashley Gray.

West Fargo won the East Region championship with 196 points. Fargo South came in second with 121.5 points. North finished fourth with 95 points.

Simonson broke a long-standing mark in the 300-meter hurdles. Simonson’s time of 45.54 seconds didn’t break an East Region mark, but it did best a 31-year-old North school record of 46.09 set by Beth Lucken in 1982.

“I feel really satisfied,” Simonson said. “Last week I was beat in the 300 hurdles at the Jamestown meet. That really motivated me to work hard this week to get the record.”

Simonson, who is committed to run track at Minnesota State-Mankato, has been close to breaking the record the last two seasons, and in her second-to-last meet as a prep athlete, it fell.

“I walk by the record board in the gym every day,” Simonson said. “I look at it and think, ‘I got to get that.’ I knew I could do it and if I didn’t break it (Saturday) then I was going to try again at state. I just made sure I broke it (Saturday).”

“She has been chasing that record for a long time,” Fargo North head coach Aaron Walker said. “She has been focused all season, and it is a big accomplishment for her.”

Shanley girls rally for 3,200-meter relay win

Fargo Shanley started Saturday with a win in the girls 3,200-meter relay.

The Deacons team of senior Haley Brenner and freshmen Jessica Vig, Ellen Erie and Andrea Vetter raced to a time 9 minutes, 54.86 seconds. The team’s seed time entering the race was 10:02.41.

“It was huge,” Brenner said. “We knew we had to go as hard as we could to beat West Fargo. Everyone ran their race. Jessica (Vig) got an awesome start, Ellen (Erie) did well too, and Andrea finished it off. It was a team effort.”

Brenner, the third leg of the relay, built a lead, and Vetter closed it out.

“I like being the anchor, because I’m really competitive and like to stick it out at the end of races,” Vetter said. “Haley helped us by getting the lead, so I could finish it out.”

“I thought each leg of the relay did what it needed to,” Shanley head coach Barry Anderson added. “It was an intelligent race and was a season-best time for the girls. They all ran personal-record splits.”

Strandemo, Klug, Schalow pace Bruins

Fargo South seniors Madeline Strandemo and Lindsey Klug and junior Emma Schalow each scored region titles on Saturday.

Strandemo won the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:08.58 and also finished second in the 800 meters.

“My strategy was to go out and be aggressive,” Strandemo said. “I broke my personal record by about six seconds, which will gave me confidence heading into the state meet.”

Klug, the defending Class A state champion in the 100-meter hurdles, won the event posting a time of 15.72.

Schalow won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 2 inches.
