Fargo Shanley's softball coach resignsFARGO – Fargo Shanley softball coach Samantha Ankrum’s career with the Deacons didn’t last long. She resigned May 8 with just a few weeks left in her first season at the helm of the Deacons.
Why exactly Ankrum resigned is unknown. She did not return messages from the Forum on Saturday.
“I cannot give that reason out,” said Shanley Athletic Director Randy Nelson, who has taken over as coach of the Deacons for the rest of the season. “Personal reasons, I can’t talk about those things. I just felt what would probably be best for the girls was for me to take over as coach because they are familiar with me, instead of trying to bring in someone new for the last two weeks.”
Nelson has some experience on the diamond, having coached Minot State baseball for two years with another year as an assistant coach.
The hitting and the fielding he can handle. It’s that other thing that is a bit of a pain.
“Pitching-wise is a different story,” Nelson said. “They won’t let my girls throw overhand.”
Nelson has brought in Becca Conant to help with the pitchers. Conant is a former Shanley pitcher and recently completed her college career at Concordia-St. Paul.
