Letter: Help the Nokota horses right away

A group of Nokota horse lovers and conservancy supporters in southeast Pennsylvania has been trying to help support the efforts of the Nokota Horse Conservancy since before they were an official 501(c)(3) organization. We believe strongly in the importance of preserving this rare and historic breed.

We’ve taken this message to events as international as the Devon Horse Show and other international events at this same location, such as Dressage at Devon and the American Gold Cup. We’ve participated in horse expos, had a presence at any event where we were welcomed, including the Pennsylvania Farm Show, and traveled outside of the state to raise awareness. Through all of these efforts, we’ve raised awareness and some money but not enough to tip the balance to provide a permanent sanctuary for the Nokota horse.

In my opinion the Nokota horse has made Linton, N.D., a tourist destination. If the conservancy could have land, build a real sanctuary for these

horses and have a lodge with amenities and more, they could create the facility that can make these horses and their home self-sustaining.

In my judgment the state of North Dakota with assistance with funds from the federal government and private donations should easily be able to make this happen, but it must happen very soon.
