Groups in 8 ND communities getting orchard grantsBISMARCK — Projects to plant trees and develop orchards in eight North Dakota communities are getting state help.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has awarded grants totaling $18,000 through the North Dakota Community Orchard Project. He says the goal of the federally funded project is to increase production of fruit and nut trees, provide educational opportunities and foster community spirit.
The money can be used for plants, equipment and supplies, soil products, irrigation and fencing. It can't be used to buy land or to build permanent structures.
Twenty five groups applied for grants. The eight receiving money are in Jamestown, Medina, Grand Forks, Hettinger, Elgin, Leonard, Marion and Bismarck.
