Grand Forks Red River wins its 13th straight ND East Region tennis title

FARGO – Make it 13 straight North Dakota East Region team championships for the Grand Forks Red River girls tennis team.

The Roughriders continued their dominance, defeating West Fargo 5-0 on Thursday at Courts Plus. The win completed Red River’s perfect run through the tournament after picking up 5-0 wins over Grand Forks Central and Fargo Davies.

“You never go into any match at this tournament thinking you are going to win 5-0,” Red River head coach Greg LaDouceur said. “You want three wins and to get four and five, that is just a bonus.

“I thought every match that we played (Thursday), the girls elevated their play as they needed to,” LaDouceur added. “I was proud of the way we played.”

Red River (11-0) extended its dual winning streak to 160 matches and will be the No. 1 seed from the East at the state tournament May 23-25 in Grand Forks.

West Fargo has lost the last four East Region team championships to Red River.

“Red River is such a great team, and they are just so deep,” West Fargo head coach Chad Anderson said. “We are a deep team, but we aren’t even close to the depth they have. I did see that glimmer of hope from my girls, which you don’t always see when playing Red River. They thought they had a chance, which says a lot about our program.”

West Fargo, Fargo Davies and Valley City also qualified for the state tournament. Davies defeated Fargo South 3-2 in a state-qualifying match to earn its first trip to state in program history.

“The girls put in a solid effort,” Davies head coach Brad Miller said. “A lot of the girls on this team have been playing in the program the last three years and they deserve to go to state.”

Red River didn’t change its lineup in its three matches on Thursday, but LaDouceur said he’ll evaluate it heading into the state tournament.

Senior doubles player Lalangi Marasinghe and sophomore teammate Alexis Caoili capped an impressive day, defeating West Fargo’s No. 1 doubles combo of Katie Baasch and Kaylee Stock 6-0, 6-0.

Marasinghe has not lost a match since her eighth-grade year and has only lost a total of four matches in her six years on the Roughriders varsity.

“I thought we all played well,” said Marasinghe, who has won four consecutive state doubles championships. “I think coming in we were a little nervous because we knew West Fargo has a very talented team, but we all stepped up, played our best and had some fun.”

The individual tournament begins today. The finals are scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Courts Plus.
