County hires AIS enforcement deputiesDETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Becker County has hired two seasonal aquatic invasive species enforcement deputies. They will focus on inspection, education and enforcement of Minnesota laws regarding AIS. Some of those laws include:
- Cleaning visible aquatic plants, zebra mussels and other prohibited species off of watercrafts, trailers and all water-related equipment before transporting them from any water access;
- Draining water from equipment including bilge, live wells, motor, ballast tanks and portable bait containers before leaving water accesses or shoreline property, personal watercraft users should briefly run the powertrain to expel all water; and
- Keeping drain plugs out and water-draining devices open while transporting watercrafts.
If equipment fails to comply with these laws, citations and fines will be issued. For more information about the fight against invasive species in Becker County, go online to www.co.becker.mn.us and click on the AIS program link.
