Looking for the best time to catch Fargo Marathon runners at a certain place? Here’s a peek into the future

FARGO – Saturday’s Fargo Marathon courses snake through 26.2 miles of Fargo.

So as part of his yearly preparation for photographing runners, Forum Photo Chief Michael Vosburg put together the 2013 Vosmometer, which predicts just when the greatest numbers of people, or swells, would flood an area.

Noting that the average marathon time is 4 hours and the average mile is 9 minutes, Vosburg plugged the info into a spreadsheet to calculate the greatest crush of runners at each mile marker.

“There will be runners before and after, but this is the time of the swell peak,” he says. “This is like peak traffic times.”

The Vosmometer has proven useful in catching up with the runners you’re cheering on as well as avoiding a traffic jam if you’re traveling around town.
