Area grass fires keep firefighters busy

FARGO – Warm, dry conditions across North Dakota and Minnesota resulted in several grass fires in the area.

Fire crews battled a blaze near Tower City, N.D., on Monday night that crept toward a farmstead. The blaze was in an area about four miles north of the city near County Road 1.

A grass fire threatened a house Monday morning south of Moorhead. The fire was reported at about 9 a.m. at 8088 Highway 75 S. Firefighters extinguished the grass fire in the yard before it reached the house.

Several grass fires in Clay County made for a busy Sunday afternoon for the Hawley and Barnesville fire departments.

Both departments battled and extinguished a grass fire near Highway 34 east of Barnesville, as well as a separate fire south of Barnesville near the Wilkin County line on Highway 9, according to Sgt. Brian Norberg.

Earlier in the day, the Hawley Fire Department had responded to and extinguished a grass fire in rural Hawley, Norberg said.

No injuries were reported and no property was damaged as a result of the fires, said Stacey Riedberger with the Hawley Fire Department.
