Grand Forks' Chipotle dreams crushed; burrito company says Twitter account is a hoax

GRAND FORKS - A Twitter account that had Grand Forks fans of the restaurant Chipotle dreaming of burritos has turned out to be a hoax.

An account with the handle @ChipotleGF popped up Friday with claims that the Mexican grill chain restaurant was coming to Grand Forks in 2014 or 2015.

“This time next year #UND students will be able to celebrate finals week with #ChipotleGF,” the pranksters tweeted.

The account has accrued more than 170 followers since Friday but is not affiliated with the company, according to Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold.

“As for a location in 2014 or 2015, that’s (so) far out that we wouldn’t be talking about it,” Arnold wrote in an email. “We don’t discuss plans for specific locations until we have space under lease and construction scheduled, and there is nothing there that meets those criteria.”

The company says it is not looking for franchises currently, but its real estate department does have a request form for those that “want a Chipotle in your backyard.”

If the expressions of joy tweeted at the fake account’s announcement are any indication, Chipotle fans will likely be crushed.

“I will literally cry for days if this actually happens,” user elyssadetorre posted.

Others had different celebration plans.

“I will go upstairs and slap my mother if this is true! #burritosonburritos,” user Ander_Conda tweeted.
