Letter: We should place focus on safety of our childrenDuring the first weekend in May, Safe Kids Fargo/Moorhead conducted its third annual car recycling event. This event included seven hours over a two-day period. At the end of the event, we had collected 371 unsafe/outdated car seats. These car seats were stripped down to just the plastic – all fabric, harnesses, nuts/bolts, etc. were taken off by our wonderful volunteers. The plastic was then sent to Grand Forks for recycling.
The coalition and its many members want to thank everyone who brought in their car seats for recycling.
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the city of Fargo, for donating the trash container for garbage; Fargo Police Department, Sanford Children’s and Kohl’s Associates in Action for volunteering to break down the car seats; and Roers Property Management for the use of their parking lot.
A special thank you to AAA North Dakota for co-sponsoring the event and having volunteers help tear apart car seats, as well as offering prize registration and a free gift to those who attended the event.
For those who were not able to attend our event and who want to properly dispose of their old and unsafe car seats, it’s important to dismantle the car seat so others don’t take it and try to reuse it. Make sure to cut off all harness straps and buckles and remove the fabric covering. Place the harness straps/buckles and fabric into a garbage bag and leave the plastic shell separate.
