Fargo Davies tops West Fargo in girls soccer match

FARGO – The Fargo Davies girls soccer team entered Tuesday scoring eight goals per match, but offense was a little harder to come by in its matchup with West Fargo.

Despite the decline in offensive output, Davies defeated West Fargo 2-0 during an Eastern Dakota Conference game at Davies High School.

The Eagles have scored 18 goals through three games this spring and are 3-0-0 atop the EDC standings.

“Our main goal is to work as a team, start out fast and get the other team out on their feet,” senior forward Emily Wendorff said. “Ultimately we want to get to that state championship and make sure we keep working well as a team.”

Wendorff and senior teammate Paige McCullough got the Eagles on the scoreboard 26 minutes, 34 seconds into regulation.

McCullough booted a pass from the corner to Wendorff, who kicked it past West Fargo goal keeper Amy Archibald.

Wendorff and McCullough are both committed to play soccer at Concordia this fall.

“They know each other so well from playing soccer together for 15 years,” Davies head coach Nick Christianson said. “Being able to get that first goal was a great start for us.”

Sophomore forward Reiley Klose added her team-leading seventh goal of the season for Davies in the 58th minute.

“She is just another one of those people we can plug in,” Christianson said. “She has had a tremendous year so far, and she just has to keep progressing.”

Davies qualified for the state tournament last year and finished fifth.

“This is the type of win that we need to help us move forward,” Christianson said. “West Fargo is a very competitive team. We knew they were going to challenge us with hard pressure. We scored in the first half against the wind, and after that we tried to control the possession a bit and get some shots on net.”

West Fargo falls to 1-1-1 with the loss.

“We played for 60 minutes, but we needed to play 80,” West Fargo coach James Moe said. “We stopped for two minutes in the first half and they scored. Their second goal was just a nice take, but Davies is the best team in the conference. We did a good job of getting our chances, but when those don’t go in, it brings you down a little bit.”

FIRST HALF: 1, FD, Wendorff, (McCullough), 26:34.

SECOND HALF: 2, FD, Klose, (Wendorff), 58:18.

SAVES: WF, Archibald 11. D, Orson 2.
