Letter: Forum wrong on ‘unfair’ taxes

Regarding The Forum’s editorial, “Time to end unfair advantage” states that tax collections are experiencing a loss.

The editorial states that there is a loss of revenue to the state. There is no loss of revenue to the state to leave things as they are. You can’t lose what you never had.

Extending the sales tax creates less spendable income for the population and would reduce the standard of living in your state.

An alternate proposal is to reduce the tax rate to 4 percent in addition to requiring online retailers to charge sales tax. That would be a fair and equitable solution for the people (i.e. voters) and the tax collection for the states should be about the same. This avoids creating a windfall for the state at the expense of the consumer.
