Letter: Where is their follow-through?

I read with interest the commentary by Anna Higgins (April 28, Page C6, “ND is a leader for life”) in which she praises the Legislature for their actions regarding the “groundbreaking pro-life legislation” (her words). She traveled from Washington, D.C., more than once at the request of the bill’s sponsors.

I would like to ask Higgins and others, “Where is your follow-through?” I have seen nothing when the issue is affordable child care in North Dakota. I have seen nothing when the issue was affordable or even the availability of medical care for children. I have seen nothing when the issue was proper nutrition for children. I have seen nothing when the issue is public safety for children. Bishop Samuel Aquila managed a huge postcard campaign when the issue was abortion. Why no massive campaign when these other issues were considered?

On Page C7 of the same issue of The Forum, Tom Ricker, president of the North Dakota AFL-CIO, lamented the absence/weakness of on-the-job safety regulations for workers. Where is the follow-through from Higgins and others when these children join the workforce and are maimed or killed?
