3 new state judges approved for North Dakota

BISMARCK — The North Dakota Supreme Court is taking public comments on where it should base three new state district court judgeships approved by the Legislature.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple has signed a bill approved by the House and Senate that provides for the new judges — one in the southeast and two in the northwest. Chief Justice Gerald Vandewalle had asked lawmakers for the new judgeships to help handle a large increase in court cases due in part to the oil boom in western North Dakota. The cost is estimated at $1.7 million.

Two of the new judgeships are in the Williston-based Northwest Judicial District and the third is in the Fargo-based East Central District. They need to be filled within 30 days of the bill becoming law on Aug. 1
