Letter: School finances stir emotions

Recent letters and comments about the future of small “neighborhood” schools in Fargo continue to be heavy on emotion and ignorant of the financial bind facing the Fargo School District.

Six elementary schools have enrollment between 146-214 students. District enrollment in 2005-06 was 10,788 and the general fund budget was $97 million. Current enrollment is 10,835 with a general fund budget of $123 million.

In seven years, the cost of educating the same number of students has risen by $26 million. The Fargo School Board needs to purchase nine pencils and a sharpener real soon. I’ve got an extra eraser I will donate to the cause.
