ND man dies after driving pickup through icy floodwaters

WALES, N.D. – A 51-year-old man is dead after his pickup became partially submerged on a washed-out road, after which he left it and tried to walk home through the icy waters.

The driver was found dead this morning about 9:30 a.m. His name is being withheld pending family notification.

The man from Hannah, a small town just a couple miles south of the Canadian border directly north of Devils Lakes, was apparently trying to drive home late Tuesday night on 99th Ave. N.E. about eight miles east of Wales, Sgt. Robert Kennedy of the North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Kennedy said it appears he tried to drive his 2012 Chevrolet pickup over a part of the road that had been washed out by rising water earlier that day.

Investigators think the man tried to exit his truck and was killed by the icy water and unusually cold temperatures, he said.

“When the water gets going, you can leave and then come back the same way two hours later, and the water will have come up,” Kennedy said.
