Paddlefish snagging season opens in northwest ND

WILLISTON, N.D. — May Day marks the start of the annual paddlefish snagging season in northwestern North Dakota.

The season runs through the month, though the state Game and Fish Department can close it early if it appears too many fish will be caught. That has happened often in recent years.

Snagging is legal in all areas of the Yellowstone River in North Dakota, and in most of the Missouri River west of the U.S. Highway 85 bridge to the Montana border.

Paddlefish snagged on Wednesday, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays must be harvested. Fish snagged on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays must be released.

A full list of rules can be found at http://www.gf.nd.gov .
