Woman opens new dog grooming, boarding business in Fargo
Until last fall, when the company she worked for closed its doors.
“So, I thought to myself, ‘I guess this is my sign to do what I’ve always wanted to do,’ ’’ said van Litsenburg, whose new business, Prairie Dog, has a grand opening today.
Prairie Dog, at 5370 51st Ave. S., Suite B, in Fargo, offers canine grooming, day care and boarding.
Prairie Dog is next door to Prairie Winds Veterinary Center. While the two businesses are not affiliated, van Litsenburg said the proximity of two pet-oriented facilities should make things convenient for clients of both.
Prairie Dog can handle 30 or more dogs a day on the day care side, van Litsenburg said. She anticipates most clients will drop off pets at least a couple times a week.
To be accepted for day care, a dog must pass an evaluation that shows it is not aggressive.
Daily activities will include a meet-and-greet period for the dogs and regular outdoor breaks.
Also, “We’re going to have movie time. I have two big-screen TVs,” van Litsenburg said.
She said that while some animals show no interest in TV, others are “all over it.”
Van Litsenburg said she plans to eventually add pet massage to the list of services offered at Prairie Dog.
But opening her business to animals other than canines probably isn’t going to happen.
“I would like to have all animals welcome, but when I did the research on boarding cats, they’re just such a different breed of animal I decided to focus on dogs,” van Litsenburg said.
Research also dictated where her business would go.
“This area, demographically, is really, really growing,” she said. “They’re constantly building, so it was a very desirable area.”
