Suspicious object turns out to be part of geocache gameFARGO – After responding to a report on Saturday of a suspicious object on a bike path near Cass County Highway 81 and Libra Lane, county deputies determined it was placed as part of a geocache game.
Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and then share their experiences online.
When deputies arrived at the scene after receiving the report from a resident, they found an object consistent with materials used to construct a pipe bomb, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The Red River Valley Bomb Squad was dispatched and rendered the object safe.
In the release, the sheriff’s office encouraged those participating in the game to use common sense when choosing the type of container and placement of treasures to avoid incidents like the one on Saturday.
