Cobbers tab Roos to lead women's soccer team

MOORHEAD – The Concordia Cobbers have selected a familiar face to lead their women’s soccer program.

Former Concordia men’s player Kevin Roos has accepted the head coaching job.

“I’m very passionate about the sport and I think it’s a great opportunity,” said Roos, who has also been an assistant in both men’s and women’s programs at Concordia.

Roos will continue to be the head girls soccer coach

For Fargo Shanley in the spring. Concordia’s soccer season is in the fall.

Roos is taking over for Dan Weiler, who resigned in March to take the head women’s soccer job at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.

Roos had been an assistant coach for Weiler at Concordia in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

“Dan has done an amazing job,” said Roos, who has been the head girls coach at Shanley for 10 seasons. “I have worked with him for a long time and view him as a mentor.”

Weiler had a 144-58-24 record in his 11 seasons as head women’s coach with the Cobbers. He led the team to the NCAA Division III tournament six times.

Roos said Concordia assistant coach Betsy Olesen would remain on staff.

Last fall, the Cobbers had a 17-4-2 record and won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. They also advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.

“I know it will definitely be a challenge,” Roos said. “They had some very good seniors and some good players coming back. … I think it’s going to be an amazing experience.”
