Oakport: Roads likely won’t need clay topping

OAKPORT TOWNSHIP – A township board official said Friday that given the National Weather Service’s latest flood forecast, the township doesn’t expect it will need to place clay on roadways to keep water out.

“But we will be prepared to act should the situation change,” said Jeff Schaumann, chairman of the Oakport Township board.

The National Weather Service has said the Red River may reach almost 38 feet by Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

At a river stage of 38 feet, the township has very few actions that must be taken, according to Schaumann, who said the township will begin plugging some culverts and shutting gated drainage structures, just in case.

“We will also be mobilizing pumps into these affected areas, should they become need,” he said.
