Business digest (April 27)Encore Entrepreneurial Resource Fair May 8
The West Central Minnesota Small Business Development Center, the Small Business Administration and the American Association of Retired Persons are partnering to sponsor a free Encore Entrepreneurial Resource Fair from 9 to 11:30 a.m. May 8 in the Barry Auditorium at Concordia College.
The fair will provide information to individuals age 50 and older on how to start or grow a small business and about available resources. Refreshments will be served.

Marco purchases Iowa telecom company
Marco has purchased Hyde Telecom Partners, a data and telecommunications company that serves clients in central and eastern Iowa.
This is Marco’s sixth acquisition over the past nine months. The company now employs more than 650 people throughout 34 locations in the Upper Midwest, including Fargo.
Chick-fil-A Leadercast to be held in Fargo
The Chick-fil-A Leadercast, a daylong leader development event broadcast live from Atlanta, is scheduled May 10 at the Fargo Holiday Inn.
Speakers for this year’s event include: Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric; Andy Stanley, best-selling leadership author and communicator; Mike Krzyzewski, head men’s basketball coach, Duke University and Team USA; John Maxwell, best-selling author and leadership expert; Henry Cloud, best-selling author and leadership consultant; Rorke Denver, Navy SEAL and star of the 2012 movie “Act of Valor.”

Nonprofit leadership conference set June 5-6
The 2013 Nonprofit Leadership Conference is scheduled June 5-6 at the Fargo Holiday Inn.
The conference, hosted by the North Dakota Association of Nonprofit Organizations, brings together nonprofit staff, board members and volunteers from across the state to participate in educational sessions, network and exchange ideas. Attendees can save $50 by registering by May 22.
The conference rate is $120 for NDANO members and $195 for nonmembers until early bird registration ends on May 22.

West Central Ag plans two building projects
West Central Ag Services, Ulen, Minn., plans to invest $22 million in 2013 on projects including two fertilizer plants to be built at its locations in Beltrami and Foxhome, Minn.
The Beltrami project will include a 34,000-ton fertilizer plant to complement the 1.5-million-bushel grain facility expansion project completed last year.
The project at the Foxhome location will include a 10,000-ton fertilizer plant to replace the current 2,400-ton plant and will allow for more capacity and faster delivery.
Both projects are scheduled to start this spring. West Central Ag Services plans both to be up and running in spring 2014.
Social media in HR topic of May 7 luncheon
The Fargo Moorhead Human Resource Association will host an educational luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 at the Ramada Plaza and Suites, Fargo.
The keynote speaker will be Jennifer McClure, president of Unbridled Talent, who will address how successful HR professionals are using social media to develop professionally and grow their careers without breaking any rules.
A bonus session, “7 Strategies for Moving from HR Leaders to Business Leaders” is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Equipment improves food safety research
New cutting edge equipment at North Dakota State University will improve food safety and disease research on wheat and barley.
The equipment, manufactured by Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, Calif., is an ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph and quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometer and is unique within the North Dakota University System
The QTOF, obtained through the efforts of NDSU researchers Senay Simsek and Paul Schwarz, examines the influence of genetics and external environmental factors on the small molecules or metabolites produced by the biochemical pathways in a plant.
Dacotah Bank acquires 2 Minn. bank locations
Dacotah Bank, Aberdeen, S.D., has acquired the United Farmers & Merchants State Banks in Morris and Chokio, Minn.
Dacotah Bank serves customers in 31 locations in North Dakota and South Dakota. The Morris and Chokio locations will be the company’s first locations in Minnesota.
ASC to distribute Volvo equipment in ND, Minn.
ASC Construction Equipment has taken over heavy equipment sales and service of the Volvo brand and the utility product line from Swanston Equipment Co., Fargo.
Swanston will continue to offer customers the Volvo road machinery equipment line, the full Bobcat line of equipment as well as Etnyre, Cimline, Broce Broom, Clement, Komptech, Finn, Gomaco and Sioux lines of equipment.
Vogel Enterprises buys EZ Open Garage Door
Vogel Enterprises, owned by Bill Vogel, president, and his son, Billy Vogel, vice president, has purchased EZ Open Garage Door Inc. from Bill Tisdell.
Bill Vogel has been involved in the garage door industry for 35 years and Billy Vogel has worked in the industry for five years.
EZ Open Garage Door has been in business in the Fargo-Moorhead area for 38 years and also operates a branch in western North Dakota.
