Letter: Reject plans to give away freedom

I have often wondered why we are so willing to relinquish our freedoms to make people like Jim Hanson (column, April 20 “To voter ID whiners: Grow up”) feel so secure. We went to war with the Nazi regime and they always wanted their citizens to carry paperwork. I guess that was to make sure they liked Adolph Hitler. How often have we seen or heard cartoons stating, “Your papers please, comrade!” Just another totalitarian group keeping tabs on their citizenry.

I made a career in the U.S. Air Force and spent many years overseas. I always had to carry a plethora of ID with me and if any of it was missing I didn’t cross various borders or get the various benefits I was entitled to as a military member. After more than 20 years, it felt good to have the freedom of not having to prove that I was who I said I was and carry all that garbage with me everywhere.

Now we have people wanting to give away that freedom so they can feel “secure.” They want to give away my freedom, your freedom, our freedom and gradually move us closer to the totalitarianism we rejected over the past several decades. It’s time to reject those who would so easily give away our freedoms.
