Kipp G & Tony The Butcher bring rap, hip-hop to FM’s Finest
FM’s Finest is a weekly concert series running through May sponsored by The Forum and music promoter Jade Presents. All performances take place at The House of Rock at The Hub.
Kipp G and Tony have been performing around Fargo-Moorhead since 1999. Being one of the only rap duos in the area during that time, Kipp G says they’ve had the unique opportunity to be able to introduce the community to the sounds of hip-hop.
“It’s been hilarious and fun being one of the main people to place ‘the germ’ into the community, and give people options to have more fun that they thought was possible in Fargo,” he says.
Material for the duo’s music is mostly taken from their life experiences, Kipp G says, as well as from local observations.
“We talk about North Dakota things, that are unique to North Dakota and relatable to most people that live in the Midwest,” he says. “More specifically, we rap about our own unique lives and experiences.”
Aside from being the only rap performers in FM’s Finest, the men share another distinction of the bunch – the only group that includes an actual butcher.
“(Tony) went to butcher college and knows every cut of meat under the sharpness of his blades,” Kipp G says.
For people thinking of coming to check out tonight’s show, Kipp G describes their performances as being full of frenetic energy.
“We fly around like maniacs,” he says. It’s “a mix of very fast energetic rapping and some smooth chill happy raps.”
As for what he wants fans to take from their live experiences, Kipp G says he hopes “they feel a sense of belonging and a friendship with the fun-loving Fargo world.”
