Letter: Vote in Senate was proceduralPeople should be clear about what the “no” votes on background checks for gun sales that Sens. John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., just cast really were. They were not votes against background checks per se, but procedural votes against allowing the Senate to even vote on the subject.
Forbidding all senators from voting on the bill represents a peculiar notion of democracy. Why did they not allow the vote to proceed so they could vote their views and let other senators vote for what they think is right?
