Letter: Shame on Schultz for his remarksMiddle school students and teachers from Grace Lutheran School worked at Sandbag Central to make sandbags. Watching all the willing hearts contribute to this effort was a beautiful thing to see.
The comments made by Ed Schultz about “slave labor” are ignorant and wrong. Everyone there wanted to be there, and everyone there had a choice. Slaves don’t have a choice, and slaves are treated poorly. The people of the Salvation Army took excellent care of us, and even the truck drivers pitched in to provide lunch for all the volunteers. These are examples of true servant hearts, and that is what our students were modeling.
The younger students of Grace Lutheran School put uplifting messages on sandbags that will eventually be filled and used somewhere. It is their way of contributing to the flood fight, and their way of making the hard work even more worth it for someone out there sandbagging. It’s clear to see not everyone understands why we live in the Red River Valley. We have an excellent work ethic, we help out our neighbors (rich or poor, and everywhere in between), and we pass these values on to our children.
Shame on you, Ed Schultz.
