GIRLS

Fargo Davies

Coach: Brad Miller (3rd year)

Last year’s finish: Did not qualify for the state tournament

Who’s gone: Janelle Wanzek; Elli Hoge

Who’s back: Laura McGuigan, Soph.; Emily McGregor, Fr.; Brynn Poppe, Soph.; Paige Stevens, Soph.; Abby Olson, Fr.; Emily Honl, Sr.; Ellen Keim, Sr.; Jenna Forknell, 8th grade

Coach’s comments: “Our team is full of athletes that put some work in during the offseason,” Miller said. “Many of the players have increased their level of play and we should be a much deeper team than the previous two years we have been a program. It should be an exciting year as soon as we began competition.”

Fargo South

Coach: Jason Thiner (12th year)

Last year’s finish: qualified for state tournament (did not place)

Who’s gone: Anna Diederich, Maddie Schultz, Rachel Aabye

Who’s back: Karen Moe, Sr. (state singles champion); Anna Lawley, Soph.; Isabel Thiner, 8th grade; Jessica McNutt, Jr.

Coach’s comments: “We are going to be much better in a 3-2 lineup than in a 6-3 lineup because we are stronger and more experienced at the top of our lineup,” Thiner said. “We have strong No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in Karen (Moe) and Anna (Lawley), which is a good asset to have in a 3-2 format.”

Fargo North

Coach: Steve Saville (1st year)

Last year’s finish: Qualified for state tournament (did not place)

Who’s gone: Kayla Bjorlie, Morgan Thompson, Halle Nystrom, McKenzie Cody

Who’s back: Mary Wessman, Soph.; Lydia Jacobson, Soph.; Carly Deal, Sr.; Jess Long, Sr.

Coach’s comments: “We lost several seniors from last year’s team and will need to fill the void with some inexperienced, yet talented players,” Saville said. “With the combination of returning talent and senior leadership, we hope to be very competitive in the conference.”

Fargo Shanley-Fargo Oak Grove

Coach: Laura Thompson (2nd year)

Last year’s finish: Did not qualify for the state tournament

Who’s gone: Madeline Frei, Jessica Nellermoe, Abby Rothfusz

Who’s back: Olivia Keelin, Fr.; Sarah Fletcher, Sr.; Therese Carson, Jr.; Kennedy Stromme, Sr.; Josie Perhus, Jr.; Lexi Madlom, Soph.; Hannah Keogh, Soph.; Taryn Nellermoe, 8th grade; Maddie Noesen, 8th grade.

Coach’s comments: “There are a lot of talented players within the program who are displaying a promising future,” Thompson said. “I have been very pleased with the skill level and determination of the athletes and I believe the girls are ready for a successful season.”

West Fargo

Coach: Chad Anderson (13th year)

Last year’s finish: Fifth place at state tournament

Who’s gone: Sarina Olson

Who’s back: Sammie Smith, Jr.; Kaylee Stock, Jr.; Katie Vaash, Jr.; Brooke Christensen, Sr.; Mariah Stein, Sr.; Jamie Freden, Jr.

Coach’s comments: “Experience is going to be key for us,” Anderson said. “We are lucky in that most of our girls on the team have been playing in our program since they were seventh-graders. They have been in the big matches and know what to expect when that time comes, which makes a big difference.

“This should be another good year for us,” Anderson added. “We should be right there at the top of the conference and in the state as well.”

BOYS

Moorhead

Coach: Tim Costello (13th season)

Last season: Lost in subsection semifinals

Who’s gone: My Zo; Tim Solum; Ben Suitsbear; Ian Glidden; Jonathon Haglund; Tom Mulvaney

Who’s back: Gabe Steinwand, Jr. (qualified for the section tournament last season individually); Kurt Meyer, Jr.; Wes Meyer, Jr.; Ethan Glidden, Jr.

Coach’s comments: “I have no idea why our numbers have jumped up to 30 kids, but it has. With numbers like that, with a spring like this, it’s been chaos. We are really excited about the future coming up though. We have players individually who will challenge for getting to the section tournament. Kurt and Wes stand a really good chance at doing well at the subsection tournament. (St. Cloud Tech) appears to be the team to beat. I think we have just as good as a chance as anyone to get a chance to play them in the section final, but they are the team to beat.”
