Passion for Green Fashion: Contest entrants create designs out of recycled materials
Using only recycled materials such as fabric scraps, plastic bags and newspaper, 37 people made clothing in a “Project Runway”-style competition.
The results, including a cocktail dress, wedding gown, swimsuit, handbag and sunglasses, will be up for viewing through April 28 in honor of Earth Month.
Alissa Sorum, West Acres marketing director, says the competition was stronger than ever this year.
“The creativity of our community was truly on display with these entries,” she says.
The winners of the third annual Passion for Green Fashion event are as follows:
• Greenest: Designer: Gracie Kuehl. Materials used: plastic bags, newspaper, pop cans, pop tabs, aluminum foil. Prize: $250 mall gift card.
• Most fashionable: Designer: Emily Harris. Materials used: phone book pages and tape. Prize: $250 mall gift card.
• Celebrity inspired: Designer: Robin Logan. Materials used: packing peanuts, bubble wrap, packing materials, newspaper. Prize: $250 mall gift card.
• Grand prize: Designer: Susanne Williams. Materials used: plastic tarp, vintage thread, vintage buttons, vintage buckle. Prize: $1,000 mall gift card.
The people’s choice award, which comes with a $250 mall gift card, will be chosen by online vote on the West Acres Facebook page. Voters can vote up to once a day through April 28.
