Letter: Transportation needs are critical

The Legislature has just over one month remaining before the end of the session. Now is the time for lawmakers in St. Paul to focus on a transportation plan that includes the entire state, including our region here in northwest Minnesota.

We have many important projects that are in need of funding, and, unfortunately, our local governments cannot afford to shoulder the costs of these projects on their own. Maintaining and improving our highway systems, our bridges and regional infrastructure is vital to our local and statewide economy, and we need to ensure we are staying competitive. Whether it’s transporting products from North Dakota through our state, farmers bringing crops into town, or families going between work and school, all of us depend on our transportation infrastructure.

That is why we should support a balanced transportation plan this session. Please encourage lawmakers to support a plan that includes our local communities and provides the necessary safety upgrades and repairs for roads and bridges.

Weyland is District 5 Clay County commissioner.
