Letter: ‘Responsible’ loses its meaning

I just finished reading the article on the morning-after pill (“Morning-after pill to be widely available if judge’s ruling stands” – Forum, April 6). Dr. Angela Diaz, director of New York’s Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, is quoted in support of the pill, saying “the more tools we have to help them (young people) be responsible, the better.” I remember a time when being responsible meant that you didn’t have casual, unprotected sex.

Now, I guess, being responsible means doing whatever it takes to avoid the consequences of bad decisions. Responsibility and accountability – two words that seem to have lost their meaning in this “do whatever feels good” society.
