Fargo deputy chief nabs suspected burglar in the actFARGO – A self-described “desk guy” with the Fargo Police Department took an unaccustomed turn nabbing an accused burglar red-handed on Friday.
“Usually, I’m looking over spreadsheets,” said Deputy Chief David Todd, head of the department’s field services division.
Todd was working on another case on Fargo’s south side Friday at about 9:30 a.m. when he noticed a U-Haul truck going around and around the same area.
The deputy chief, who was driving an unmarked car, said that seemed suspicious, and the use of a U-Haul in a recent theft case piqued his interest. After trailing the truck for 45 minutes, Todd said, he followed it to the Fargo Rentall at 1002 25th St. S.
He said he saw the driver leaving one of the rental storage units there carrying something.
“I saw him and he was scared – he had that fight or flight look,” Todd said.
Todd said the driver admitted he was stealing construction equipment out of the storage garage after having cased the place.
Anthony Johnston, 29, of Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of theft.
