Mayor wants lower speed limit on Highway 85 in NDWATFORD CITY, N.D. — The mayor of Watford City is advocating for a lower speed limit on U.S. Highway 85 in the region to try to cut down on traffic crashes.
The highway is a major artery in the booming western North Dakota oil patch, and it has become heavy with truck traffic. That has led to more accidents, including one last month that tore a vehicle in half and killed two teenage boys.
The highway is being widened to four lanes, but in the meantime Mayor Brent Sanford wants the speed limit in the area reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph.
The state Transportation Department says more than one-fourth of all traffic fatalities in the state so far this year have been in McKenzie County.
