ND AG wants $10M to battle oil patch crime

BISMARCK — North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says organized crime and other illegal activity is increasing with the skyrocketing population in the state's booming oil patch.

The Senate Appropriations Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to support Stenehjem's request to provide $10 million for additional law enforcement support in western North Dakota.

North Dakota's Senate and House still must approve the budget amendment.

Stenehjem says the money would go to help cities and counties deal with the increased crime.

He says some 65 law enforcement officers have been hired in the past year in the region but officials are still overwhelmed by the increase in crime.
