NDSU's Anderson sets unofficial women's golf wins record
Inkster won 17 playing for San Jose State from 1979-82.
“It’s a big accomplishment,” Anderson said. “Winning once is great, and to say I’ve done it 18 times, I’m thankful for every single one of those wins.”
Moreover, her Bison teammates had an equally impressive day in winning the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroo Invitational. The Bison posted the second best 54-hole score in school history with a 919 and outlasted Oklahoma City by four shots.
Anderson finished at
2-under 214 to finish two shots ahead of Oklahoma City’s Jessica Schiele in what she called a battle that went back and forth all day.
“That’s what’s fun about golf,” Anderson said, “when you go head-to-head in the same group. It was a great day out there.”
NDSU had four players finish in the top 20 of the 10-team event. Abby Knutson tied for sixth with a 230, Sarah Storandt tied for 12th at 236, Hailey Boner tied for 19th with a 240, and Cydney Hasselberg was 42nd with a 255.
“We put it together,” Anderson said. “When somebody had a bit of trouble, somebody else picked it up. That’s what team golf is all about.”
The status as being the all-time collegiate leader is considered an unofficial record. Golf World magazine first put the totals together.
Anderson will go for No. 19 at the Creighton Classic in Omaha, Neb., starting Monday.
“I’m playing well, but yet I definitely also know some parts aren’t very good, too,” she said. “My putting struggled the last couple of days, but I was pleased with how I hit the ball. It’s encouraging to see that, to strike the ball so well.”
