Weather Talk: After running late, spring should begin to catch up

The first week and a half of April has brought an average high of around 35 degrees and an average low of around 20 degrees. This is about 10 degrees below average. This weather would have been average right around the middle of March. Temperature-wise, one could say spring is running about three weeks late.

The month of March had an average high of 27 degrees and an average low of 7 degrees, which is 10.5 degrees below average and corresponds to about the third week in February. Again, this works out to be about three weeks late.

My guess is that spring will now begin to catch up, even if the weather remains cold, due to the advancing sunlight and day length. I suspect the trees will leaf out late, but not three weeks late. And the average date for the top 20 spring flood crests in Fargo is April 6. I will be surprised if the crest doesn’t arrive before April 27.
