Weather Talk: A look back at other years with chilly spring weather

The highest temperature in 2013 so far was a 43-degree high on Jan. 10 and April 3. Just two other years, 1979 and 1881, have gone so late into the spring with a maximum temperature lower than this year.

In 1881 it did not reach the mid-40s until April 15, although, just a week later the first 70-degree day arrived right near the current average.

In 1979, that first 70-degree day did not arrive until May 16, and April recorded highs mainly in the 40s. Persistent high temperatures in the 40s lingered into May that year, with nearly 1 inch of snow falling on May 5.

The spring of 1979 was as damp as it was cold, with 15 days of light rain or light snow from the middle of April through the middle of May.

The odds favor our pattern changing before the middle of May this year, but if it happened once, it could happen again.
