Letter: Extremists take over a good state

Although I no longer live there, I have always been proud to have been born and raised in North Dakota. And while I did not always agree with its generally conservative politics, I could at least respect its level-headedness and sense of personal liberty. I have been very surprised then, and greatly disappointed, to see this practical conservatism taken over by an extremist single-issue interest group.

The recent law signed by Gov. Jack Dalrymple represents governmental intrusion at its most odious. Roe v Wade was already headed for a court test by recent laws in Arkansas and elsewhere. To watch my home state abandon women’s rights to appease a narrow political constituency is disappointing.

I’m glad at least that North Dakota voters will have a chance to weigh in directly on this issue in the fall. I expect common sense to prevail, and narrow, divisive politics to be rejected.
