UND assistant football coach takes job at Penn. universityGRAND FORKS - When Greg Breitbach decided to apply for the head coach job at Millersville (Pa.) University, it didn’t take long for the school’s search committee to contact University of North Dakota coach Chris Mussman.
The committee literally contacted Mussman within hours after receiving Breitbach’s application. From there, the former UND offensive coordinator was on the fast track to become the new coach at Millersville — a Division II program that competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Millersville officially named Breitbach as its new coach Thursday and the school will introduce the former UND assistant today in the southeast Pennsylvania city.
“It’s a great opportunity for Greg,” Mussman said. “The hardest jobs to get in coaching are your first full-time job and your first head coaching job. Every coach’s career goal is to become a head coach. It was time for Greg.”
Breitbach spent seven years on the UND staff, the past five as the offensive coordinator. Under Breitbach, UND had one of its more prolific offenses in school history during the 2012 season.
“It was a tough decision, but the opportunity to be a head coach at the collegiate level has always been a dream of mine and Millersville felt like the right place for me to take that next step in my coaching career,” Breitbach said.
Breitbach’s departure comes on the eve of UND’s spring football season. That means in-house staff changes have been made.
Luke Schleusner, who spent last season as the program’s receivers coach, has been promoted to offensive coordinator, said Mussman.
UND now will open the 2013 season with two new coordinators as assistant Josh Kotelnicki was elevated to defensive coordinator recently after Mike Mannausau left to become the executive director of the UND Champions Club.
“I have two young guys excited to become coordinators,” Mussman said. “The program means everything to them.”
Schleusner and Kotelnicki have deep UND roots. They were teammates on UND’s 2001 national championship team. And they were also roommates in college.
Another staff change has Kyle Myers becoming a full-time assistant. He will work with the defensive line after coaching linebackers in 2012. Also, former UND standout Joel Schwenzfeier will join the staff, likely working on the offensive side of the ball.
UND is scheduled to open spring drills Friday at Memorial Stadium.
