Weather Talk: Average snowfall drops dramatically in AprilFargo-Moorhead averages 9.1 inches of snow during the month of March. Last month we recorded 14.3 inches. Although that is slightly above average, most of that extra snow was attributed to the colder-than-average temperatures observed in March.
The average precipitation in March is 1.30 inches. Last month we recorded 1.44 inches, which is right near the average. Of the 1.44 inches of moisture, only 0.06 inch was from rain; the rest was recorded from melted snow. Climatologically, the percentage of rain to snow in March is usually significantly higher than last month’s. With an average temperature that finished 10.5 degrees below average, it is not surprising that last month recorded so little rain.
In April, the average precipitation stays approximately the same, 1.36 inches, but the average snowfall drops dramatically to 3 inches as the warmer temperatures in April often, but not always, lead to more frequent rain showers rather than snowstorms.
