Police mum as they investigate fatal Minnesota methadone overdose

NEWPORT, Minn. - Authorities say a man died of a reported methadone overdose in Newport over the weekend, but were tight-lipped as they continued investigating this week.

Newport police officers were called early Saturday to an apartment complex for a 32-year-old man who had reportedly overdosed on methadone, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Newport police. He died later at a hospital.

Police identified him Tuesday as Dennis K. Tarmuat, who lived at the complex.

A 42-year-old woman who also lives in the complex was arrested on suspicion of third-degree murder without intent to cause death and third-degree controlled substance. She was expected to be released Tuesday without charges but pending further investigation, according to the Washington County Attorney’s Office. She was still considered a suspect.

Fred Fink, lead Washington County prosecutor, declined to discuss details of the case, citing the ongoing investigation. Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery said he was asked by the prosecutors not to discuss the case.

Authorities were awaiting autopsy and toxicology results.
