86-year-old Minn. woman cleared of voter fraud

ST. PETER, Minn. — Authorities in Nicollet County have tossed out a case against an 86-year-old woman who had been accused of voter fraud.

Margaret Schneider of St. Peter voted by absentee last year, and then showed up again in August to vote in the state's primary election. Schneider has Parkinson's disease and suffers from dementia, and said she had forgotten about the absentee vote.

Nicollet County prosecutors said when they charged Schneider last month that the law left them no choice. Assistant County Attorney James Dunn declined comment at Tuesday's hearing, The Free Press of Mankato reported.

Schneider's attorney Bill Sherry says Schneider and her family don't want to comment. Her record will be cleared if she has no other voting infractions by November of next year.
