ND House rejects tax credit for homeless shelter donations

BISMARCK — North Dakota's House has rejected a measure that would have given people an income tax credit if they donated money to a nonprofit organization that operates a homeless shelter in the state.

The House killed the bill Friday. The measure unanimously passed the Senate last month.

Republican Rep. Jim Schmidt of Huff says there's a need for more homeless shelters in North Dakota. But he says the tax credit wasn't fair to other nonprofits in the state.

The North Dakota Homeless Coalition says the state has an immediate need for at least 1,500 beds statewide
