Metro area serves as health-care hub

Fargo-Moorhead’s three medical centers make the metro area a health-care hub for the Red River Valley and beyond.

Following is a summary of major local medical providers:

Family HealthCare Center:

Family HealthCare Center is a community clinic with several locations that provides medical and dental services for vulnerable populations, including the homeless and uninsured.

A diverse population of patients, including many refugees, pay on a sliding scale based on their ability to pay.

Heartland Independent Provider Network:

The Heartland network consists of 65 physicians and 125 ancillary providers, including chiropractors, rehabilitation specialists and counselors.

As independents, the providers are not affiliated with the two major health systems, which include hospitals and affiliated clinics.

Providers are located in many locations in and around Fargo-Moorhead.

Innovis Health and Dakota Clinic:

Innovis Health is a 74-bed community hospital associated with Dakota Clinic; both are at 3000 32nd Ave. S. in Fargo.

Dakota Clinic has about 175 physicians spanning 55 medical specialties. It also has five other locations in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo, and a total of 21 locations in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota.

Innovis offers around-the-clock room service, giving patients the option of ordering foods they choose, and most can set their own visiting schedules. Rooms are equipped with a state-of-the-art communications system connecting patients with nurses.

MeritCare Medical Center is the largest hospital-clinic in North Dakota, with two Fargo campuses: downtown at 720 4th Street N., and in south Fargo at 1720 S. University Drive.

Together, the two campuses have 583 beds, including North Dakota’s only accredited children’s hospital.

MeritCare Medical Group has 361 physicians in 70 specialties who handle more than 1.4 million patient visits a year in 33 locations, including 11 in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo.

MeritCare’s main, downtown campus is undergoing a major renovation and expansion, scheduled for completion in 2006. It will include a new patient entrance area, new heart center and expanded radiology services.

Walk-in care services for both adults and children are available at 1720 S. University Drive.

Children’s walk-in services are available at its Southwest Clinic, 2701 13th Ave. S., Fargo.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center:

At 2101 Elm St. N., Fargo, the VA center serves veterans from throughout North Dakota, one-third of Minnesota and two counties in northeastern South Dakota.
