Train derails at busy north Fargo intersection

FARGO – A north Fargo intersection re-opened late Thursday afternoon after six train cars carrying coal flipped off the tracks there Wednesday night.

The coal cars remained upright when they derailed at the intersection of 19th Avenue and 45th Street North, said BNSF Railway spokeswoman Amy McBeth.

She said crews got them back on the tracks by about 8:20 a.m. Thursday, but railroad equipment still needed to be cleared from the scene.

Fargo police Lt. Joel Vettel said the stretch of 45th Street south of 19th Avenue was closed to vehicle traffic for much of the day Thursday. The northbound stretch remained open.
